It’s a shark-eat-shark world, but does that make for bigger pups? A comparison between oophagous and non-oophagous viviparous sharks

چکیده

Abstract Oophagous reproduction (i.e., consumption of unfertilized ova in utero) sharks has been hypothesized to result fewer but larger pups relative those produced by viviparous with different modes maternal nutrient transfer. We compared pup and litter sizes reported the literature for 106 shark species lecithotrophic viviparity, oophagy, placental viviparity as methods transfer during pregnancy. Using a suite permutational tests, we accounted effect size test whether oophagous strategies do indeed smaller litters reproduction. Our results demonstrated that was significantly reduced placentally Further, influence on length more variable, generally only than However, when investment expressed mass (minimum size), oophagy neutralized. found further evidence at birth directly modulated habitat, suggesting may also be adapted conditions nursing grounds. study supports hypothesis both maximize their reproductive fitness allocating nutrients pups, whereas through well

Sharks senses and shark repellents.

Despite over 70 years of research on shark repellents, few practical and reliable solutions to prevent shark attacks on humans or reduce shark bycatch and depredation in commercial fisheries have been developed. In large part, this deficiency stems from a lack of fundamental knowledge of the sensory cues that drive predatory behavior in sharks. However, the widespread use of shark repellents is...

Does having a twin brother make for a bigger brain?

OBJECTIVE Brain volume of boys is larger than that of girls by approximately 10%. Prenatal exposure to testosterone has been suggested in the masculinization of the brain. For example, in litter-bearing mammals intrauterine position increases prenatal testosterone exposure through adjacent male fetuses, resulting in masculinization of brain morphology. DESIGN The influence of intrauterine pre...

Fine-Scale Movements of the Broadnose Sevengill Shark and Its Main Prey, the Gummy Shark

Information on the fine-scale movement of predators and their prey is important to interpret foraging behaviours and activity patterns. An understanding of these behaviours will help determine predator-prey relationships and their effects on community dynamics. For instance understanding a predator's movement behaviour may alter pre determined expectations of prey behaviour, as almost any aspec...

Lack of multiple paternity in the oceanodromous tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier)

Multiple paternity has been documented as a reproductive strategy in both viviparous and ovoviviparous elasmobranchs, leading to the assumption that multiple mating may be ubiquitous in these fishes. However, with the majority of studies conducted on coastal and nearshore elasmobranchs that often form mating aggregations, parallel studies on pelagic, semi-solitary species are lacking. The tiger...
